You've booked the session.
Your planning is under way.
You’re ready to roll.
And now you’re in front of your closet thinking: what on earth do I wear?
Your wardrobe is NOT an afterthought — it’s part of your brand message.
These photos will live on your website, your grid, your collateral…. They will do a LOT of heavy lifting for your business in the days ahead.
So not to add more pressure, but.... what you wear matters. But fear not!
Here are 7 ways to make your photoshoot wardrobe work for YOU:
Before you grab a single hanger, get clear on what your brand FEELS like. Are you:
There’s no wrong answer.
But your outfits should match your brand. A financial planner and a wellness coach are both professionals — but they shouldn’t dress the same for their brand sessions.
Lock in on your brand personality and your outfit choices become a lot easier.
Does your business have an established color palette? Your website colors, your logo — the specific hex codes your designer gave you? Great. THIS is your moment to lean in to those.
When your outfit matches (or coordinates with) your brand colors, everything on your website feels cohesive. And intentional.
Your headshots, your Instagram grid, your email header — it all fits together visually.
If your brand colors don’t translate well to clothing (neon yellow, anyone?), that’s fine — GO NEUTRAL. Just don’t clash with your own brand. If your website is soft sage and cream and you show up in a bright red blazer, the photos will feel disconnected even if everything else is perfect.
This one might sound like extra homework, but hang on a sec.
A personal color analysis — where a stylist or color consultant identifies YOUR most flattering color palette — can genuinely change how you look on camera.
The right colors make you glow.
The wrong ones can make you look washed out or tired (even with great lighting).
If you haven’t had one done, it’s worth a quick search (I used getthecolorkey.com and they were great!).
It’s a low-effort investment that pays off for years and years.
Your outfit doesn’t exist in a vacuum — WHERE you take the pictures matters too.
Exposed brick wall? Soft, solid-colored tops will pop beautifully.
Outdoor greenery? A deep jewel tone will sing.
Busy wallpaper at a coffee shop? Keep it simple.
A wild floral print against a busy background is… a LOT. And not in a good way.
Your brand photographer should help with outfit-to-location planning before the camera ever comes out.
Brand sessions are an investment – and you’ll want your photos to last.
If you’re hoping for a gallery that will carry you through 6 – 12 months of content, a heavy wool turtleneck or a linen sundress is going to look pretty out of place in a few months.
Season-neutral pieces — a tailored blazer, a clean wrap dress, a solid polo for the guys — keeps your gallery feeling fresh and usable year-round.
However, if you’re the kind of business owner who wants to refresh your look (or products) seasonally, consider multiple sessions. Many brand photographers offer mini sessions or subscriptions for this purpose.
But for those shooting annually, think timeless over trendy.
Your brand session is a time to feel like your best self — and your clothing plays a big role in that.
Before the session, try on every outfit you’re considering. And then move in it. Sit down. Turn around. Arms up and down.
Do you love it? Excellent!
However, if you find yourself thinking “it’s fine if I keep my arms like this” or “I can make it work if I xyz” — then NO. Discomfort shows on camera every time.
Luckily, so does confidence. So make sure you’re comfortable!
Also, lean into what makes you feel amazing. Love your shoulders? Wear something that shows them off. Bold red lips are your signature? Bring it.
And if there are things you’d rather not highlight? Be upfront about that too. Your brand photographer will be considering flattering poses and angles already, but the more you share, the better!
Some of us are born stylists. And then… there are the rest of us.
Many boutiques and department stores offer complimentary personal styling appointments — just ask. Bring your session details, be honest about your brand vibe, and let them help you pull it together.
And work with your brand photographer. Send photos and get an easy second opinion.
Your photos are a key part of your overall brand message.
Incorporating a wardrobe that is on-brand, confidence-building and unique to YOU will help complete that brand story.
A little planning goes a long way, and you’ll feel it the moment you see that gallery.
When you're ready to take your brand to next level, let’s tell your story!
