It's the night before senior pictures...
In your child's bedroom, this is the scene: The closet is open. Clothes are on the bed. And probably on the floor. There’s a group chat with 47 opinions. And here it comes:
“I have NOTHING to wear.”
Here’s the thing: this is really not a wardrobe problem.
The seniors who walk away with their favorite photos aren’t the ones who wore the “right” thing. They’re the ones who wore something that felt like — them.
But what if we approach the whole senior picture wardrobe process a little differently???
For every outfit you are considering…TRY IT ON. And then:
Sit down. Twirl. Jump. Lay down.
If ANYTHING about that outfit makes you think “I have to remember to hold my arms this way” or “this will be perfect as long as I xyz” — just NO.
Discomfort reads on camera. Always.
Luckily, so does confidence. The goal is to show up in something you forget you’re wearing. The rest will simply fall into place.
Senior photos are not about perfection. We’re not building a modeling portfolio or recreating someone else’s Pinterest board.
We’re building the story of YOU.
So say goodbye to that pressure. Choose outfits that make you feel good — outfits that feel like you and help tell your story.
TIP: Shop your closet first — your favorite things may already be there. But if you want new things, please order EARLY. Nothing kills pre-session confidence like a package that’s still “out for delivery.” And last minute shipping fees are the worst.
To make this process as easy as possible, we are going to break down your wardrobe options into four categories. Then simply pick and choose what feels best for YOU!
Every session needs this one. This is probably the outfit framed above the fireplace. The 8x10 grandma wants. The one you put in the yearbook and won’t cringe at 20 years from now.
Classic doesn’t mean boring. It means clean, intentional, and a little elevated. Think solid colors or subtle patterns. Something that photographs well and doesn’t compete with you, or the background.
Mom and Grandma will love this one. But trust me, you’ll also be glad to have it.
This one is for YOU. The outfit that says “this is exactly who I was at 17.” Lean into your style here — whatever that looks like.
White dress & boots, anyone?
Yes, trends change. Yes, you might look at this photo in 10 years and laugh a little. That’s not a problem. That’s the whole point. The best senior photos don’t just show you at your “best.” They show you exactly as you are TODAY.
TIP: Consider accessories here too. Sunglasses, jewelry, hat, scarf. Anything that adds personality and gives you something to play with during the session.
This is often the most underrated. And always produces the best, most natural photos.
Think about your favorite hoodie... The worn-in jeans... The thing your people see you in alllll the time. We aren’t reaching for polished here. We want relaxed, comfortable and REAL. The camera loves that.
Pair this with your dog or your truck… it’s a winner every time.
For the seniors who have a “thing,” this is probably the most fun category. This is your opportunity to create gallery images that are completely unique. Cookie cutter senior photos are no fun.
So grab your varsity jacket. Your jersey. Your instrument. All the medals. Whatever has defined your high school story — that chapter belongs in your senior pictures.
TIP: Let your hobby help with location selection. A football player on the home field. Water polo in the pool. The right location, clothing, and props tell the complete story.
Remember: there’s no wrong answer when you are planning senior photos. The goal is just to look like you. Wear the classic outfit for grandma. Grab something fun just for you. And if you’ve got a sport or hobby that defines this season — please bring that too.
When you walk into your session in comfortable clothing that feels like you, the hard work is already done. The smiles will follow.
